The veteran duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma won't participate in the third round of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. As revealed by Cricbuzz, Virat Kohli will return to the Delhi squad later, while Rohit Sharma will next be seen in action during the ODI series against New Zealand.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma played a pivotal role in India's recent ODI series win against South Africa. After showcasing their batting exploits in the high-voltage series, the talismanic cricketers represented their respective state teams in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in a bid to prepare for the New Zealand challenge.

Why Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma aren't playing today's Vijay Hazare Trophy match

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma played the first two Vijay Hazare Trophy matches for Delhi and Mumbai, respectively. However, the veteran cricketers were absent from the playing XIs of Delhi and Mumbai in the third round encounters against Saurashtra and Chhattisgarh.

It's worth mentioning that a DDCA official, while speaking to Cricbuzz, has confirmed that Virat Kohli will also miss the upcoming group-stage matches against Odisha and Services. As he oozed his class in the first two games, scoring 208 runs at a blistering strike rate of 128.40, Kohli doesn't really need a rigorous grind to prepare himself for the New Zealand series.

On a similar note, an official from the Mumbai Cricket Association has told Cricbuzz that Rohit Sharma will no longer participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, having convinced the selectors about his readiness for the BlackCaps' challenge.

When Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will play their next Vijay Hazare Trophy match

As revealed by Cricbuzz, Virat Kohli will rejoin the Delhi squad for their penultimate Vijay Hazare Trophy encounter against Railways on January 6. After that, the stylish right-hander will link up with the Indian team for the New Zealand ODIs.

On the contrary, Rohit Sharma won't return to the Mumbai setup for the remainder of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Instead, the former Indian captain will straightaway play the New Zealand series, starting on January 11.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's performance in Vijay Hazare Trophy

The Indian squad for the New Zealand ODIs will be picked on either January 3 or 4, with both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma likely to be included in it.
