Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill introduced spinner Sai Kishore into the attack to bowl the last over of the innings against Delhi Capitals in Ahmedabad. In doing so, Gill became the third captain after Sachin Tendulkar and Adam Gilchrist to hand a spinner his first over in the last over of the first innings of an IPL match.

It is to be noted that such an incident happened after 15 years in the biggest T20 league in the world. Kishore, who has come of age this season, bowled a disciplined last over conceding only nine runs whilst dismissing DC batter Ashutosh Sharma.

As a result, he bettered veteran Mumbai Indians cricketer Rohit Sharma’s 14-run over for Deccan Chargers. Coincidently, Gilchrist had handed the ball to Rohit ahead of Jaskaran Singh against MI in Navi Mumbai in 2010.

Former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya, representing Mumbai under Tendulkar in 2009, had bowled the last over against Rajasthan Royals in Durban in the second season of the IPL. By far, Jayasuriya’s three-run over consisting of two wickets is the best among these three names.

Sai Kishore Doesn’t Let Shubman Gill Down

Bowling with just four fielders outside the 30-yard circle as a slow over rate penalty, the left-arm spinner tried his best to hide Gill’s miscalculation. Bowling over the wicket to Ashutosh, Kishore didn’t bowl in his hitting zone.

Thereby, Ashutosh and Mitchell Starc scoring just two runs on the first three balls which included the former refusing a single once. On the fifth delivery of the over, Kishore managed to dismiss Ashutosh as he hit the ball straight to long-on.

Had it not been for a Kuldeep Yadav boundary off the last ball, Kishore could’ve well restricted Capitals to under the 200-run mark.
