If luck had a face, Rohit Sharma would probably want to have a serious conversation with it. India’s nightmarish streak with the toss just refuses to end, and at this point, it almost feels like the coin has a personal vendetta against them.

Rohit Sharma’s Luck Runs Out Again As India Lose Another Toss

The latest chapter in this toss horror story unfolded at the Champions Trophy 2025 final in Dubai, where Rohit once again walked back after yet another unsuccessful call.

With this 15th straight ODI toss defeat, India now holds the world record for the longest streak of consecutive toss losses in the format. But that’s not all—Rohit Sharma has now equalled Brian Lara’s record of losing 12 consecutive tosses as captain, a feat that probably no one wants to achieve.

It all started on that heartbreaking evening in November 2023, when India lost the World Cup final toss to Australia in Ahmedabad. That day, things spiralled downhill and since then, the coin has never fallen in India’s favour.

Whether it was their tour of South Africa in December 2023, Sri Lanka in August 2024, or even the home series against England in February 2025, the pattern has remained the same: India walk out for the toss, Rohit calls, the coin lands, and the opposition skipper shakes hands with the match referee while Rohit scratches his head in disbelief.

The Champions Trophy has been no different. Three group-stage matches, a semi-final, and now the final, all tosses lost.

Rohit Sharma Equals Brian Lara’s Unwanted Record

Tosses are a game of chance, but when you’re losing them one after the other for nearly a year and a half, questions start popping up. With 12 consecutive toss defeats, Rohit now finds himself sharing the world record with West Indies legend Brian Lara.

Here’s how the most consecutive ODI toss losses by a captain stack up:

Player
Consecutive Tosses Lost
Country
Duration
Brian Lara12West IndiesOct 1998 - May 1999
Rohit Sharma12India
Nov 2023 - Mar 2025
Peter Borren11Netherlands Mar 2011 - Aug 2013

Yes, tosses don’t decide matches, but they sure set the tone for how a game unfolds. A streak like this means India have rarely been able to dictate terms before a ball is bowled. More often than not, they’ve had to react instead of taking control, which is never an ideal situation.

With the Champions Trophy final underway, Rohit will be hoping his batting and bowling units can cover for his misfortune with the coin. At this rate, India might just have to flip their luck around; literally and figuratively.
