Rohit Sharma made a booming return into the Indian team for their third and final ODI match against Australia in Rajkot. The batting veteran, leading his side’s colossal pursuit of 353 to complete a 3-0 routing of the visitors, provided a splendid start at the top of the order.

Sharma raced to 50 in 31 deliveries, all while batting alongside experimental opener Washington Sundar. One of Sharma’s earliest sixes from the run-chase also helped him scale a new world record in international cricket, just mere days after he becoming the second fastest batsman in ODI history to complete 10,000 runs.

Sharma adds another record to his expanding batting register

Rohit Sharma belted Australian pace heavyweights Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins all for sixes inside the Indian powerplay. In doing so, the dynamic opening batsman surpassed New Zealand’s Martin Guptill in scaling an all-time batting record in international cricket.

Sharma, who made his international debut back in 2007, has so far hit 259 sixes across all formats for the Indian team at home. His latest set of maximums against Australia took him past Guptill (256 sixes in New Zealand) to become world’s highest six-hitter in a single country.

Overall, the Indian captain has cleared the fence 551 times across all international forms of the game. As of now, he is only two sixes away from levelling up with all-time leading six-hitter Chris Gayle (553), and might very well achieve the same against Australia at the high-scoring Rajkot surface.
