India’s blockbuster World Cup 2023 showdown against defending champions England broke out before a capacity crowd in Lucknow on October 29. Amidst much buzz and excitement in the air, hosts' star attraction Virat Kohli was trapped for a nine-ball duck by England's new-ball pacer David Willey.

England's ardent fan group, the Barmy Army, instantly took to X (formerly Twitter) and celebrated Kohli's downfall in the high-octane contest. The English fan club shared a morphed image of the cricketer on the microblogging site, where Kohli's head was planted on a duck to signify his scoreless dismissal in the innings.

While Team India eventually ended up charting a competitive 229-9 in their 50 overs, England's run-chase response at the top was jolted even worse by India's new-ball attack, which featured ducks from batting veterans Joe Root and Ben Stokes.

As expected, a legion of Indian fans stormed to social media to mock the Barmy Army by sharing a similar morphed image of the two senior English cricketers.

Indian fans troll Barmy Army for premature dig at Virat Kohli

A number of Indian fans mocked the Barmy Army for berating Virat Kohli after the legendary batsman was dismissed for a duck. The fans in question responded by using the same meme template shared by the English fan group to signify early dismissals of Joe Root and Ben Stokes during England's high-octane run-chase in the evening.

In hindsight, Joe Root, batting at number three, was trapped in front for a first-ball duck by Jasprit Bumrah. England's comeback veteran Ben Stokes also lost his stumps against a searing Mohammed Shami a couple of overs later in the innings.

Their twin departures left England struggling at 33-3 in their run-chase in a must-win World Cup 2023 game.
