Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal have delighted fans with their opening partnership in red-ball cricket for some time, but the duo has now made waves in ODI cricket as well. In the 3rd ODI between India and South Africa in Visakhapatnam where the pair stitched their first 100-run partnership in the format, joining an elite list of record-breaking opening stands for India against South Africa in ODIs.
Rohit-Jaiswal register second highest opening partnership ever vs South Africa in ODIs
In the decider of the three-match ODI series in Visakhapatnam, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal laid the perfect foundation for India’s chase of 271 against South Africa. The conditions were seaming in the first few overs, and both batters approached cautiously, ensuring the new ball did not take early wickets.
As conditions got better, Rohit was the first to open his arms, guiding India to 85 for none by the drinks break. Keshav Maharaj’s arrival briefly slowed the scoring, but Rohit counter-attacked with authority, never looking back. The duo crossed the 100-run mark in the 20th over, marking India’s first century opening stand against South Africa in ODIs since 2013. Jaiswal also caught up, completing a much needed half-century for him.
Rohit eventually departed for 75, bringing the 155-run opening stand to an end. This partnership not only kept India firmly in the driver’s seat but also became India’s second-highest ODI opening partnership against South Africa, only behind 193 by Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar in Johannesburg in 2001.

Virat Kohli then joined the party, supporting Jaiswal as he went on to score his maiden ODI century. India chased down the target comfortably with more than 10 overs to spare, sealing the series 2-1. The Rohit-Jaiswal opening blitz proved decisive, setting the tone for a commanding victory and etching their names in India’s ODI record books.
