On Thursday, Rishabh Pant created history as he surpassed former Test captain Rohit Sharma to attain a huge milestone in the history of the World Test Championship (WTC). Pant was uncertain to play on Day 2 of the Manchester Test due to a broken toe injury he suffered on the first day. The batter was reportedly ruled out for 6 weeks, but he showed grit and determination, and came out to bat.
When Pant breached the 40-run mark, he created history and went past Rohit to become India's leading run-getter in WTC history. Rohit had 2716 runs in 40 WTC Tests, while Pant overtook him and now has 2731 runs in WTC cycle. The ongoing match is Pant's 38th match of the WTC cycle, as he continues to etch his name in history books.
Rishabh Pant's stellar record in WTC history
The WTC started in 2019, and in six years time, Pant has managed to become the best keeper in the world in Tests. Interestingly, he missed the entire 2023 due to a career-threatening injury, and yet, he continues to rise in the batting charts. In 38 matches, Pant has 2731 runs, including six centuries and 15 fifties to his name.
Most runs for India in WTC history
Batters | Matches | Runs |
Rishabh Pant* | 38 | 2731 |
Rohit Sharma | 40 | 2716 |
Virat Kohli | 46 | 2617 |
Shubman Gill | 36 | 2512 |
Ravindra Jadeja | 43 | 2232 |
Pant has been India's best batter in the WTC cycle, and the numbers tell the entire story. He has played the least number of matches in the list given, and yet, the batter continues to dominate.
Rohit Sharma held the number one position for a long period of time, but a couple of poor series vs New Zealand, and Australia, and Pant's astonishing run slipped him in the table.
Virat Kohli, who was India's best Test batter till 2019, had a dip in form in 2020, and since then, his number went down considerably, and even though he occupies the third spot, the batter has the least average amongst all the Indian batters.
Shubman Gill, the current India captain, and Ravindra Jadeja occupy the fourth and fifth spot respectively.
