On Friday, December 26, Delhi locked horns against Gujarat at the BCCI centre of excellence for the second round of Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025. Eyes were on Virat Kohli, who scored a century in the first match against Andhra.
The right-handed batter picked up from where he left off in the first match and slammed a blistering 29-ball fifty. The right-handed batter missed out on a consecutive century and amassed 77 (61). After Virat’s wicket, Delhi struggled to hold a grip on the game, which is when Rishabh Pant stepped in and rescued his side.
The Delhi captain, who had a terrible outing in the first game, issued a warning to the selectors with his knock in the ongoing match. Notably, the southpaw slammed 70 (79) and returned among runs with eight fours and two sixes.
Pant’s knock helped Delhi put 245/9 after 50 overs. Talking about his Vijay Hazare Trophy stint, Pant has amassed 75 runs in two innings as he only managed to score 5 (9) against Andhra.
Rishabh Pant eyes return to ODI set-up
The southpaw is one of India's main figures in Test cricket, but is out of scheme of things in white-ball cricket. It is worth noting that the southpaw has not played for India in ODIs since their 2024 series vs Sri Lanka, where also the 28-year-old played a single game and amassed six runs.
Since 2023 ODI World Cup, Pant has played just one ODI for India, but with this knock against Gujarat, Pant is knocking on the selectors door for a place in 2027 ODI World Cup as a second-choice keeper behind KL Rahul.
Further, Pant is expected to play more games in Vijay Hazare Trophy as he is not a part of India's set-up for upcoming series against New Zealand.
