Ravindra Jadeja joined RR for 14 crores [Source: AFP]
In a significant development, Ravindra Jadeja has officially shifted his base from Chennai Super Kings to Rajasthan Royals. The Indian Premier League confirmed the development through an official statement on Saturday morning, hours before the IPL retentions.
While CSK retained Jadeja for INR 18 crores last season, the Royals secured his services for INR 14 crores. Thus, Ravindra Jadeja saw his IPL stocks decrease by a significant amount of 4 crores. As the veteran allrounder joins the Royals camp, here we decode the possible reasons behind the surprising drop in Jadeja's IPL salary.
Jadeja is at the fag end of his IPL career
- Ravindra Jadeja has been an absolute champion in the Indian Premier League. The talismanic cricketer, who made his debut for RR, became an integral member of the CSK setup, representing them in twelve seasons.
- However, the experienced campaigner will be 37 by the next IPL and being on the wrong side of the 30s could be one of the major reasons behind the drop in his IPL stocks.
- As cricketers age, their reflexes gradually slow down. Apart from that, being a spinner is not easy for someone who is at the fag end of his career. Providing enough revs and outfoxing the batters with guile and variations are daunting tasks for aged spinners. So, his age could be a reason why Jadeja agreed to join RR for 14 crores.
What value Jadeja adds to RR setup?
- Unlike Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals have a formidable and settled batting lineup comprising Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel. Given that RR will likely release some really high-budget picks, the inaugural champions will certainly go after power hitters in a bid to add depth and quality to their finishing department.
- So, Jadeja's role in RR could be reduced to a bowling allrounder, who might also be asked to play useful cameos down the order. A similar role was assigned to Wanindu Hasaranga, whom RR had purchased for INR 10.75 crores. Jadeja is undoubtedly an upgrade over the Lankan ace, but an amount of INR 18 crores would've been a bit too high for him at this stage of his career.
A gamble that might go either way
- Signing a 37-year-old spin allrounder to address their lower middle-order and spin-bowling issues is definitely a temporary solution for Rajasthan Royals. It remains to be seen if Jadeja assumes RR captaincy after Samson's departure.
- Whatever the case may be, it's a gamble from RR's perspective that can go either way. So, it's natural that the Royals must've had a bit of hesitation in offering him a massive signing amount. That said, if Jadeja proves his mettle, his stocks might see a surge around the next mega auction.
