Rutherford-Motie's rescue effort lifts West Indies to 189 in second ODI (@doncricket_/X.com)
In a remarkable comeback during the second ODI of the West Indies tour of Sri Lanka 2024, Sherfane Rutherford and Gudakesh Motie lifted the visitors to a total of 189 with an incredible 119-run partnership for the 9th wicket, which is the highest stand for the 9th wicket in the history of Windies ODI cricket.
After a rain delay that shortened the match to 44 overs per side, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bowl first at Pallekele. The West Indies struggled early, with Sri Lankan bowlers Maheesh Theekshana and Asitha Fernando dismantling the top order. In just 15 overs, the Windies were reduced to 58-8, nearing a shambolic collapse.
Rutherford, Motie script history with record 9th wicket stand
However, Sherfane Rutherford’s resilience, paired with Gudakesh Motie’s composed batting, led to an incredible recovery. Rutherford scored 80 off 82 balls, smashing seven fours and four sixes, while Motie contributed with a valuable unbeaten 50 from 61 balls.
Their partnership not only frustrated Sri Lanka’s bowling attack but also set a new record for the highest 9th-wicket stand for the West Indies in the history of the ODI format.
They surpassed the 85-run partnership record previously set up by Yannic Cariah and Alzarri Joseph against New Zealand in 2022.
For Sri Lanka, spinner Hasaranga was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 wickets for 40 runs, while Theekshana and Asitha picked up three wickets each. Despite their efforts, Sri Lanka allowed the West Indies to escape from a precarious position, ending at 189 in 36 overs.
West Indies-Sri Lanka series so far
West Indies are touring Sri Lanka for three-game T20Is and as many games as the ODI series. The hosts clinched the shorter format series 2-1 despite losing the opener by a margin of 5 wickets. Heading into the ODI series, Sri Lanka won a rain-affected game by restricting the visitors to 185/4 in a 235-run chase.
Now the do-or-die game hangs in the balance for West Indies as the target is too minimal despite the game being reduced to 44 overs.
