In the ongoing Duleep Trophy final, South Zone's pacer Vidhwath Kaverappa showcased his brilliance with a remarkable seven-wicket haul against West Zone.
With career-best figures of 7/53 in 19 overs, Kaverappa played a pivotal role in dismissing West Zone for 146 in response to South Zone's score of 213. This performance marked his best bowling figures in first-class cricket.
The Karnataka seamer outstanding figures of 7/53 are the second-best by a pacer for South Zone in the history of the Duleep Trophy, following former India seamer Venkatesh Prasad's remarkable 7 for 38 against North Zone in 1993.
Despite West Zone's initial dominance at 97/1, the RCB bowler turned the game around with a fiery spell, claiming the crucial wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara, Suryakumar Yadav, and Sarfaraz Khan, causing a collapse of six wickets for just 27 runs in the final session of Day 2.
On Day 2, Kaverappa continued his impressive performance by dismissing Dharmendrasinh Jadeja to complete his five-wicket haul. He further cleaned up Atit Sheth and Arzan Nagwaswalla, ultimately bundling West Zone out for a mere 146 in their first innings and granting South Zone a significant 67-run lead.
It is worth noting that Kaverappa also claimed a five-wicket haul in the semi-final clash against North Zone.
In the match, West Zone won the toss and elected to bowl first. South Zone managed to post 213 runs in their first innings, with skipper Hanuma Vihari leading the way with a commendable knock of 63. Shams Mulani was the standout bowler for West Zone, claiming three wickets.
In response, West Zone struggled, and only opener Prithvi Shaw contributed significantly with a knock of 65 runs.
With South Zone holding a crucial lead, their batters will aim to build on it and set a challenging target for West Zone to chase in the fourth innings of the Duleep Trophy final.
