New Zealand's big vote of confidence on their new No.4 Rachin Ravindra was repaid in abundance by the promising young cricketer as he produced a majestic first century upon his return to the Test side against South Africa on Sunday (February 4).

Replacing the out-of-form Henry Nicholls in the middle-order, the earnest left-hander batted with great patience and class to reach the three-figure milestone at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. It was Ravindra's first-innings higher up the order in his first home Test since early 2022.

Ravindra not only potentially closed the door on Nicholls but also managed to impress the selectors and the team management as well as batting great Kane Williamson, who smashed a terrific hundred of his own at the other end for the BlackCaps and piled on the pressure on an understrength South African attack.

Rachin Ravindra Gets Maiden Test Century

With just three previous Test caps behind him, Ravindra showcased maturity beyond his years with his maiden ton in the longest format after walking in with the dominant hosts in a bit of trouble at 39 for 2 against the new ball.

Riding that phase through with his solid defence, the young left-hander shifted the pressure back on the Proteas and feasted as the conditions eased a touch and allowed him to unveil the freeflow of his downswing. The 24-year-old struck 11 fours and a solitary six before reaching the milestone.

The century also helped Ravindra prove a point after he was made to wait for selection in the playing XI during the tour of Bangladesh despite carrying on the wave of a tremendous ICC World Cup 2023 campaign for New Zealand.

The elegant player made 565 runs from his nine matches with three centuries and two fifties during the high-pressure quadrennial event.
