Quinton de Kock bulldozed Pakistan bowlers to headline South Africa’s emphatic series-levelling win in the second ODI. Express paceman Nandre Burger also hogged the limelight, albeit with the ball, by wrecking Pakistan’s famed top-order.
Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of the second ODI of the three-match series between Pakistan and South Africa, as it panned out at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad on Thursday, November 6.
Nandre Burger keeps PAK in check despite Ayub, Salman and Nawaz 50s
South African paceman Nandre Burger wrecked Pakistan’s top order with the early wickets of Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan as the hosts slipped to 22-3 in 4.5 overs. Young Saim Ayub and all-rounder Agha Salman subsequently forged a 92-run partnership for the fourth wicket to lead Pakistan’s counterattack, with both cricketers punching out calculated half-centuries. Salman top-scored with 69 from 106 balls, before both half-centurions were dismissed by Proteas fast bowler Corbin Bosch.
Mohammad Nawaz belted a run-a-ball 59 in the backend of the innings, while Faheem Ashraf made a quickfire 18-ball 28 to push Pakistan’s total to 269-9 in 50 overs. For South Africa, Nandre Burger picked up one more wicket in the slog overs to snare career-best ODI figures of 4-46. Nqabayomzi Peter also chipped in with three wickets, including two at the death.
Quinton de Kock and Tony de Zorzi overwhelm Pakistan in run-chase
Lhuan-dre Pretorius smeared 46 runs from just 40 balls with seven fours and a six during his 81-run partnership with Quinton de Kock in less than 12 overs before nicking one towards Mohammad Rizwan off Mohammad Wasim.
Tony de Zorzi at number three further piled on Pakistan’s misery by crafting another notable partnership, this time a match-defining one with de Kock. While Zorzi compiled 76 from 63 balls during his 153-run second-wicket stand, Quinton notched up his 22nd ODI hundred and his first since reversing his retirement. The senior opener eventually steered South Africa to a comprehensive win with roughly 10 overs intact alongside captain Matthew Breetzke.
