In a significant development, Prithvi Shaw smashed a 72-ball century for Maharashtra against Chandigarh in the ongoing Ranji Trophy at Sector-16, in Chandigarh on Monday. The 25-year-old’s knock marked his first century in the Ranji Trophy for Maharashtra and the sixth-fastest hundred in the tournament’s history.
After scoring just eight runs in the first innings, Shaw came out determined in the second innings and played a remarkable knock. His innings, laced with 13 boundaries, helped Maharashtra strengthen their position in the ongoing match.
Prithvi Shaw slams double century
Shaw did not stop at the century; he converted it into a double century. The star batter scored the second-fastest century in Ranji Trophy history.
It would not be wrong to say that this performance could be a turning point for Shaw, who would now hope to catch the attention of selectors and make his much-awaited international comeback for India.
Prithvi Shaw breaks 20-month century drought
It is important to note that this century ended a long wait for Shaw, who last reached the three-figure mark in February 2024, when he played for Mumbai. His recent form has not been decent as he began this Ranji season with a duck and a half-century against Kerala.
Shaw’s previous domestic season has also been disappointing. The star player has been the talk of the town for his fitness and disciplinary issues. Determined to start afresh, he moved to Maharashtra ahead of the current season after receiving a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Cricket Association in June 2025.
It is vital to note that Shaw last played for India in July 2021. He has represented India in five Tests, six ODIs, and one T20I. He was once considered as the next big thing in Indian cricket after his record-breaking performances at the Under-19 level.
Overall, taking a look at Prithvi Shaw's stats as a first-class cricketer, he has played 59 matches and scored 4631 runs at an average of 45.85 and a strike-rate of 82.63. Representing India in the longest format, Shaw has made 339 runs in 5 matches at an average of 42.37.
