In a significant development, Mohammed Shami has questioned the Indian team management’s decision to leave him out of the upcoming white-ball series in Australia. He has also suggested that his fitness was never an issue, but the main problem is poor communication from the selectors.
Shami takes dig at Indian team management
Shami, who last played for India in the Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand, was not included in either the ODI or T20I squads for the Australia tour. In response, the Bengal fast bowler has made it clear that he is match-fit and ready to play.
"The Indian team didn't communicate with me regarding fitness. I am not the one who would inform them about my fitness - they have to ask me. If I can play four-day cricket, then why can't I play a 50-over game? If I wasn't fit, I'd be at the NCA and not playing here in the Ranji Trophy," Shami said as quoted by India Today.
It is vital to note that Shami’s comments have come just days after chief selector Ajit Agarkar suggested that the decision to leave him out from Australia tour was due to his limited game time and lack of recent updates on his fitness status.
However, it is important to note that Shami has been named in the Bengal’s squad for the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy season, which kicks off on October 15, 2025. Now having been named in the Ranji Trophy squad, it can be said that Shami is fit and has recovered from any past injuries.
Having said this, fans and selectors will keep a watchful eye on Shami's performance, form and fitness during the Ranji season. And it would not be wrong to say that if he performs well, it may put pressure on the selectors to include him in India’s future tours.
