After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Bangladesh had a disastrous start to their innings, losing Shadman Islam, Anamul Haque and Mominul Haque in quick succession. However, Mushfiqur Rahim and Najmul Hossain Shanto built a solid partnership, leading the Tigers' fightback in the inaugural encounter of the latest World Test Championship cycle.

The duo added 264 runs, forming the foundation for a massive first innings total. Thus, they registered the highest fourth wicket partnership for Bangladesh against Sri Lanka in Test cricket, surpassing the 180-run stand recorded by Litton Das and Mominul Haque.
