New Zealand put up a strong performance in the first T20I against Pakistan at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, on March 16. After winning the toss, New Zealand chose to bowl first, and their bowlers made an immediate impact. Kyle Jamieson and Jacob Duffy dismissed Mohammad Haris and Hasan Nawaz for ducks. Agha Salman tried to steady the innings, but Irfan Khan Niazi fell to Jamieson after scoring just one run.

There was hope that Salman Ali Agha and Shadab Khan would rebuild Pakistan’s innings, but things didn’t go as planned. Shadab, who was recalled after a disappointing T20 World Cup, was dismissed for just three runs.

Tim Robinson Takes Spectacular Catch

In the fifth over, Kyle Jamieson bowled a delivery outside off-stump to Shadab Khan. Seeing the width, Shadab went for a cut shot but failed to keep the ball low. It flew towards backward point, where Tim Robinson leaped to his left and grabbed a stunning catch mid-air—reminiscent of Glenn Phillips’ famous grab in the Champions Trophy.

Jamieson’s third-over strike left Pakistan struggling at 14/4 by the end of the powerplay.

Pakistan Struggle Continues

After Shadab’s dismissal, both Khushdil Shah and Agha Salman got lucky as they were dropped early in their innings. However, Khushdil managed to hit Pakistan’s first six of the match in the 10th over off Ish Sodhi. But Sodhi got his revenge in the next over by dismissing captain Agha Salman.

Jacob Duffy then returned to the attack and removed Khushdil Shah, who had scored 32 off 30 balls. Later, Jahanad Khan was given a lifeline when Tim Seifert dropped his catch at the boundary, and the ball went for six. However, Sodhi eventually dismissed Samad, while Zak Foulkes took out Jahanad (17 off 17).

In the penultimate over, Duffy wrapped up the innings by taking the wickets of Shaheen Afridi and Abrar Ahmed. Pakistan were bowled out for just 91 runs in 18.4 overs.
