Shai Hope, West Indies skipper and wicketkeeper-batter, has knocked down a huge milestone of completing 6000 ODI runs in his career, and while doing so, he also became the second-fastest cricketer for West Indies to do so in the ODI format.

While playing the 2nd ODI against New Zealand at McLean Park in Napier, Shai Hope crossed the huge career milestone in just 142 innings, seconding Sir Vivian Richards, who reached this milestone in 141 innings. Brian Lara, another West Indies legend, now follows Shai Hope with his 155 innings piling 6000 runs.

Shai Hope, behind Kohli, Dhawan, in fastest to 6000 runs in ODIs list

Shai Hope, with his ongoing knock against New Zealand (at the time of writing), now stands joint sixth with South Africa's Quinton de Kock to have reached the 6000 ODI runs milestone.

The top record is held by Hashim Amla, who reached it in 123 innings, followed by Virat Kohli, who achieved this feat in 136 innings.

Fastest to 6000 runs in ODIs:

  • 123 – Hashim Amla (South Africa), Babar Azam (Pakistan)
  • 136 – Virat Kohli (India)
  • 139 – Kane Williamson (New Zealand), David Warner (Australia)
  • 140 – Shikhar Dhawan (India)
  • 141 – Vivian Richards (West Indies), Joe Root (England)
  • 142 – Quinton de Kock (South Africa), Shai Hope (West Indies)

With Shai Hope being one of the most consistent performers for West Indies in recent times, he also boasts 18 centuries and 30 half-centuries to his name in the format.

West Indies in tatters after Jamieson, Smith strike

Nevertheless, speaking of the match, West Indies is currently in tatters as they came in to bat first on November 19.  New Zealand won the toss and chose to bowl first, where John Campbell, like the previous ODI, failed again for just four runs, with Kyle Jamieson striking the first wicket in the sixth over.

A sharp collapse followed as West Indies kept losing wickets in the 10th, 12th, and 15th over to stand at 86 for five at the end of 16 overs. Kyle Jamieson, Nathan Smith, and Mitchell Santner were among the strikers with the ball as Shai Hope and Justin Greaves currently stand at the crease.

Nevertheless, Romario Shepherd and Jayden Seales, who are yet to bat, might not be ruled out completely for their all-round batting skills, which might help West Indies put up a competitive total and fight against New Zealand after a rain-showered pitch.
