New Zealand ended Day 1 of the third Test against England at Seddon Park, Hamilton, at 315/9 after 82 overs. While the Kiwis will feel they left runs on the table after a strong start, England had their moments but couldn’t quite close out the innings.

Here’s the timeline of how Day 1 of NZ vs ENG 3rd Test panned out in Hamilton-

NZ vs ENG 3rd Test Highlights: Latham and Young Shine in the Morning

Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bowl, hoping his bowlers would make the most of the morning conditions. However, Kiwi openers Tom Latham and Will Young had other plans.

The duo was rock solid as it countered the early storm and played with patience. The English bowlers struggled to find their rhythm as Latham and Young steadily piled on the runs. By lunch, New Zealand were sitting pretty at 93/0, with the openers showing England how it’s done.

NZ vs ENG 3rd Test Highlights: Gus Atkinson Breaks the Momentum

The afternoon session started with promise for New Zealand, but England came roaring back, led by Gus Atkinson. He struck early, trapping Young for 42 and breaking the 105-run opening partnership.

Latham continued to anchor the innings, notching up a classy fifty. But just as he looked set for a big one, Matthew Potts got him for 63, leaving New Zealand in a bit of a wobble.

Rachin Ravindra joined Kane Williamson and the pair steadied the ship briefly. But Ravindra couldn’t see out the session, falling for 18 in the final over before tea to Brydon Carse. England finished the session on a high, with New Zealand at 180/3.

NZ vs ENG 3rd Test Highlights: Williamson and Santner Show Fight

Kane Williamson looked composed but missed out on a fifty, dismissed for 44 by Potts. The middle order crumbled as Daryl Mitchell (14), Tom Blundell (21), and Glenn Phillips (5) all fell cheaply, leaving New Zealand in deep trouble.

Just when it looked like England would clean up the tail, Tim Southee decided to have some fun in his final Test. He smashed a 10-ball 23, entertaining the crowd with some fireworks. England took the second new ball, and Southee fell on the fourth delivery, but the damage was done.

Mitchell Santner stood firm as wickets fell around him. The lanky all-rounder brought up a fighting fifty and ended the day with a six and ensured New Zealand had something to smile about.

With just one wicket in hand, Santner and the last man will look to add a few more runs on Day 2. England, with the new ball still fresh, will aim to wrap things up quickly and get their batters in early.
