Travis Head walked into the World Test Championship Final 2025 with high hopes pinned on him by Australian fans, but the left-hander couldn’t deliver on the grand occasion, falling cheaply in what turned out to be a decisive morning session at Lord’s.
Jansen Traps Head Early
Head, known for his aggressive and counterattacking style, looked to continue in the same vein. But on just the 13th ball of his innings, with only 11 runs to his name, he fell victim to a classic ‘strangle down leg’.
It was the 23.2 over of the innings when Jansen, bowling at 138 kmph, delivered a full-length delivery that shaped back in down the leg side. Head tried to flick it fine, using the pace of the ball, but only managed an inside edge. The ball flew low and fast to the right of wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne, who pulled off a sensational diving catch with his right glove.
With Head’s wicket, South Africa firmly seized control of the first session, going into lunch with Australia reeling at 67/4.

"Never seen Travis Head play a genuinely classy knock, not when it counts. Even in the BGT, the moment the pitch had some movement in the last two games, he was exposed. And that’s always the case, If the ball’s doing anything, Travis Head’s doing nothing." - @silme47

South Africa At The Top Ahead Of Lunch Break
In the match, South Africa, after winning the toss and opting to bowl first in favourable overcast conditions, ran through the Australian top order in stunning fashion. The Proteas' disciplined pace attack struck early, removing both Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green in the seventh over, courtesy of a brilliant spell from Kagiso Rabada.
While Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith briefly steadied the innings, Marco Jansen returned in his second spell to break the stand and shift momentum back towards the Proteas.
At lunch, Steve Smith remains unbeaten on 26 and now shoulders the responsibility of reviving Australia’s innings alongside the middle-order. With South Africa on the charge, the post-lunch session promises more drama and possibly more damage if Australia cannot find a way to bounce back.
