In the ongoing 1st Test between South Africa and Pakistan at the Supersport Park in Centurion, Babar Azam marked his return to the Test side for the first time since his ouster from the team following two defeats against England a few months ago. Babar was kept out of the team for the last three matches because of his string of poor scores.
Fans were expecting Azam to score big as he gained some confidence in the recently concluded ODI series against the Proteas, where he smashed two-fifty plus scores. Much to everyone's disappointment, Babar failed to do anything significant and returned to the pavilion for a low score of 4 (11), which featured a solitary boundary.
Babar started his innings on a positive note as played a shot for four and also completed 4000 Test runs. However, he soon fell prey to Dane Paterson, who exploited his outside off-stump weakness.
With the feat, Babar registered another new low as it was his 19th consecutive innings in Test cricket where he failed to score a fifty-plus score. He has now played the third-joint highest innings by a Pakistani batter to not have score a fifty in Test cricket. Only, Alimudin and W Mathias are ahead of him in this list. Here is the complete list.
- 23 W Mathias
- 21 Alimuddin
- 19 Taufeeq Umar
- 19 Babar Azam
It is worth noting that Babar's last Test fifty came exactly two years ago against New Zealand in 2022 Boxing Day Test, where he played an impressive knock of 161.
