Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and senior man Mushfiqur Rahim pounded majestic hundreds to take the attack to Sri Lankan spinners on Day 1 of the series-opening Galle Test. For Sri Lanka, debutant Tharindu Rathnayake excelled in his opening spell before he struggled to regain his rhythm in the final two sessions of the day.

Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of Day 1, as it panned out at the Galle International Stadium in Galle on Tuesday, June 17.

Asitha Fernando, Rathnayake Seize Early SL Advantage

Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando struck with the new ball by getting rid of Bangladesh opener Anamul Haque for a 10-ball duck. Moments after the first drinks break of the day, spinner Tharindu Rathnayake trapped Shadman Islam to bag his maiden Test wicket on debut.

Rathnayake also deceived well-set Bangladeshi number three Mominul Haque with a fullish length outside off stump as the visitors slipped to 45-3 at the end of the first hour of play.

Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim Hit Cruise Control For BAN

Forming forces at 45-3, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and senior pro Mushfiqur Rahim crafted 247 runs together for the fourth wicket. The two cricketers extended Bangladesh’s total to 292-3 from 90 overs by stumps, with both players batting at unbeaten centuries.

Shanto notched up his sixth Test ton, completed 2,000 Test runs in the process, as he finished the day at 136* off 260 deliveries with 14 fours and a huge six. Mushfiqur, on the other hand, reached 105* from 186 balls with five regal boundaries to record his 12th Test hundred.
