Mumbai walloped Madhya Pradesh in the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 season at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The outcome handed domestic giants Mumbai their second SMAT victory, and first since winning the 2022 edition.

Mumbai fast bowler Shardul Thakur struck twice in his opening over of the match with the wickets of both Madhya Pradesh openers, Arpit Gaud and Harsh Gawli. Thakur’s new ball partner and left-arm spinner Atharva Ankolekar also accounted for the key wicket of Harpreet Singh and he delivered his four overs at an expense of just 19 runs.

Subhranshu Senapati (23 off 17) and Venkatesh Iyer (17 off 9) failed to capitalize their starts, considering they were both dismissed by Shivam Dube and Suryansh Shedge respectively as Madhya Pradesh crashed to 86-5 in 12 overs.

Batting at number five, Madhya Pradesh captain Rajat Patidar blasted six boundaries and six sixes in his scintillating 40-ball knock of 81*. His 56-run stand with silent partner Rahul Batham (19 off 14) in just a little above five overs led Madhya Pradesh’s blazing recovery in the backend of the innings.

While Mumbai’s Royston Dias picked up the wickets of Batham and Tripuresh Singh off successive deliveries in the 18th over, Patidar’s whirlwind knock extended Madhya Pradesh’s total to a competitive 174-8 by the completion of their innings.

Tripuresh’s double strike with the ball prompted Ajinkya Rahane to forge a calculated third-wicket partnership with T20 heavyweight Suryakumar Yadav to take Mumbai to the brink of the 100-run mark.

Rahane himself crafted 37 runs from 30 balls with four boundaries before getting holed out by Rahul Batham off Venkatesh Iyer at 99-3.

Following the quick wickets of Shivam Dube (9 off 6) and Suryakumar Yadav (48 off 35) to Kumar Kartikeya and Shivam Shukla respectively at 129-5, Mumbai’s number seven and Punjab Kings’ IPL 2025 recruit Suryansh Shedge clobbered 36 unbeaten runs from just 15 balls with three boundaries and three sixes.

Shedge ended up sharing an unbroken 51-run partnership with Atharva Ankolekar (16* off 6) to take Mumbai to a five-wicket victory in just 17.5 overs.
