India and Australia are all set for one of the most exciting cricket battles of the year, beginning on October 19, 2025. The tour will feature a three-match ODI series and a five-match T20I series.
This series marks the beginning of a new chapter for Indian cricket, as Shubman Gill steps in as the new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. The decision came as a surprise to many, considering Rohit had led India to a title win in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Gill will now lead India in both ODIs and T20Is, with Shreyas Iyer serving as his deputy in the ODI team.
Meanwhile, two of India’s biggest icons, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, are returning to international cricket after seven months. Their last appearance was during India’s Champions Trophy victory over New Zealand in Dubai earlier this year.
With their return, both players are on the verge of breaking several major records in the upcoming ODI series against Australia.
Records Rohit Sharma can break:
1. 500th International Match
Rohit Sharma is on the brink of playing his 500th international match. If he plays even a single ODI in this series, he will become the 11th cricketer in the world to achieve this feat. He will also be the fifth Indian to do so, joining the elite company of Sachin Tendulkar (664), Virat Kohli (550), MS Dhoni (538), and Rahul Dravid (509).
2. 50th International century
Rohit currently has 49 international centuries across all formats. He needs just one more to reach the 50-century milestone, which would place him among an exclusive list of batting legends. Having played 499 matches since his debut in 2007, the Australia tour gives him a perfect opportunity to achieve this landmark.
3. Most sixes in ODI history
Rohit Sharma has always been known for his clean hitting. With 344 sixes in ODIs, he is now just eight sixes away from breaking Shahid Afridi’s record of 351. If he does, Rohit will hold the record for the most sixes in ODI history.
4. 100 Sixes Against Australia
Rohit has a chance to become the first player ever to hit 100 sixes against Australia in ODIs. He currently needs 12 more sixes to reach that mark.
5. Third-Highest Run-Getter for India in ODIs
In 273 ODIs, Rohit has scored 11,168 runs. He needs 54 more runs to overtake Sourav Ganguly (11,221 runs) and become India’s third-highest run-scorer in ODIs, behind only Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar.
6. 1000 ODI Runs in Australia
The former captain has enjoyed great success on Australia soil, scoring 990 ODI runs there so far. He needs just 10 more runs to become the first player ever to score 1000 runs in India–Australia ODIs held in Australia.
Records Virat Kohli can break:
1. Most centuries in a single format
Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar currently share the record for the most centuries in a single format, with 51 each. Sachin’s came in Tests, while Kohli’s have all been scored in ODIs. If Kohli scores one more century in this series, he will surpass Tendulkar and hold the record for the most centuries in a single format.
2. Most runs against Australia in ODIs
Kohli has scored 2451 ODI runs against Australia, putting him second only to Sachin Tendulkar (3077). With a few solid innings in this series, Kohli could close in on Sachin’s record and further cement his dominance over the Australia team.
3. Most fifties against Australia
Kohli has 15 half-centuries against Australia, the same as Tendulkar. One more fifty will help him break Sachin’s record and become the player with the most fifties against Australia in ODIs.
4. 1500 ODI boundaries
Kohli has already struck 1325 fours and 152 sixes, making a total of 1477 boundaries in ODIs. He needs just 23 more boundaries to reach 1500.
