Mahmudul Hasan Joy takes Ireland to the cleaners [Source: @BCBtigers/X.com]
Mahmudul Hasan Joy produced one of the finest innings of his young Test career. He hammered an unbeaten 169 to put Bangladesh in complete control against Ireland on Day 2 of the first Test at the Sylhet Stadium.
His patient and determined knock helped Bangladesh reach 338/1 at stumps, giving them a 52-run lead after Ireland were bowled out for 286 earlier in the day.
Mahmudul Hasan Joy approaching record double century
Young opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy received excellent support from Shadman Islam, who played a brisk 80 off 104 balls, setting the tone early for Bangladesh’s innings.
The pair added a massive 168-run opening stand, which broke Ireland’s spirit after a promising bowling start in the morning.
Shadman fell to Matthew Humphreys, caught by Lorcan Tucker, but by then Bangladesh were already in control.
In his stunning knock, Joy played 283 balls, scoring 169* runs, including 14 fours and four sixes. He was still unbeaten at stumps on Day 2 and is most likely to hit a maiden double century on Day 3.
After Shadman’s departure, Mominul Haque joined Mahmudul Hasan Joy in the middle and ensured there was no collapse.
They formed yet another durable partnership of 170 runs, as they irritated and frustrated the Irish bowlers and kept the scoreboard ticking over.
Mominul’s unbeaten 80 off 124 balls complemented Joy’s anchor role perfectly, as both batters rotated the strike smartly and picked boundaries with ease.
Ireland bowlers had a hard day on field
For Ireland, the bowlers toiled hard but struggled to find breakthroughs. Only Humphreys managed to get a wicket, while others like Andy McBrine and Curtis Campher went wicketless despite long spells.
The visitors’ attack looked short of ideas once Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Mominul settled in.
With a lead already in hand and nine wickets still remaining, Bangladesh will look to pile on the runs on Day 3. If Joy can convert this into a double century, it could set the stage for a massive first-innings total and a potential victory over Ireland.
