Amid the trade talks between Sanju Samson and Ravindra Jadeja, former India selector Kris Srikkanth has put up a hot topic for the Chennai Super Kings franchise, doubling on the difficulties the franchise might face if they let go of the all-rounder.
Jadeja, moving to Rajasthan Royals, will see a void in the all-rounder spot for CSK, who has been a pillar of strength for the franchise. Sharing his opinions, Srikkanth was vocal about the dynamics that might come into play.
Kris Srikkanth shares his opinion on CSK's three-way trade deal
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kris Srikkanth first opined on the Sanju Samson move, where he stated that Urvil Patel is a good wicket-keeper batter and if the camp is interested in developing someone after MS Dhoni, Patel is a great option.
“Without Jadeja, who’s your all-rounder in CSK? Having an all-rounder is very important; it’s the key role in the T20 format. I am not discounting Samson, who’s superb. I’ve been reading that Sanju Samson will slowly be developed as the successor to Dhoni. But for that, you’ve Urvil Patel already. He’s also a wicketkeeper batter,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
Kris spread options like Cameron Green on the board but stressed on the fact that he is not as effective with the ball as he must be.
“By leaving Jadeja, CSK will have to scout for another all-rounder. Someone like Cameron Green is not a tried and tested material. He’s not a great all-rounder. He’s a batter who can bowl and fill in the four overs. He’s not a deadly bowler. Jadeja can win matches with his batting, bowling or fielding,” Kris added.
Kris raises finger at Samson's credibility in CSK
Further, Kris criticised the trade of Ravindra Jadeja as he compared the value that Samson will add in place of Jadeja.
"Jadeja has also not got great opportunities with the bat the last two years. He would come in with two balls left. But one has to see where he has batted and the situation of the game then. He doesn’t come at the top of the order. He comes at 6 or 7 predominantly so there’s only 10-12 balls to play at that time," Kris said.
"Even Sanju Samson’s record in IPL 2025 is nothing great. It isn’t great that he just got starts in most matches when he’s batting top of the order. How many big scores did he make coming as an opener? Only one, a 60-odd. Anyone can just give starts, even Urvil Patel has been giving starts. I am not belittling Sanju Samson. This is only Samson in comparison to Jadeja," Kris concluded.
With the trade dynamics yet to be exposed, with Rajasthan Royals having trouble with their overseas quota with their interest of having Sam Curran for a three-way trade and also not having the purse for bringing in the English al-rounder, fans have to wait a few days more to get a clear scenario.
