Young South African batter Dewald Brevis had a memorable outing, amassing a glorious fifty on his first innings in Test cricket. Coming at number six, the swashbuckling batter changed the course of the match with a breezy knock at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
Brevis, Pretorius Join Long List Of Elite South African Batters
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, South Africa had a disastrous start to their innings. Tanaka Chivanga emerged as Zimbabwe's wrecker-in-chief, getting prized scalps of Tony de Zorzi, Matthew Breetzke and David Bedingham.
However, Dewald Brevis steadied the ship for the Proteas, forming a valuable fourth wicket partnership with Lhuan-dre Pretorius. While the southpaw brought up his maiden Test fifty, Brevis followed him up, attaining the milestone with two huge consecutive sixes off Vincent Masekesa.
His 38-ball half-century is the fastest-ever by a South African debutant in Test cricket.

Thus, as mentioned in the above table, Jacques Rudolph still holds the record for the highest individual Test score for South Africa on debut, having slammed a glorious 222*-run knock against Bangladesh.
Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Dewald Brevis find themselves on the elite list comprising some of the most notable names from South African cricket, including HD Ackerman, Aiden Markram and Faf du Plessis.
Soon after completing his fifty, Brevis was outfoxed by Blessing Muzarabani, who put an end to his blistering 41-ball 51-run knock. After his departure, wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne joined Lhuan-dre Pretorius in the middle.
Although Brevis couldn't convert his start into a century, Lhuan-dre Pretorius has a golden opportunity to slam a hundred and etch his name in history books. The 18-year-old is currently batting on 78, with South Africa placed at 171 for five, as of writing.
