Australia Test batter Marnus Labuschagne has announced his return to form in style, scoring a brilliant century for Queensland against Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield opener at Allan Border Field, Brisbane.
Labuschagne slams his 33rd FC century
After struggling for runs over the past year, Labuschagne reminded everyone of his class with a superb 160 off 205 balls, marking his 33rd first-class hundred. Resuming on 54 not out, he reached his milestone before lunch on day three, breaking a 14-month drought since his last first-class ton. His innings helped Queensland reach an impressive 2-350 at lunch.
Notably, this century is Labuschagne’s first since July 2024, when he scored 119 for Glamorgan in the English County Championship. He has shown glimpses of form recently, including a quick 130 from 118 balls in the One Day Cup last month.
With this knock, the 31-year-old also crossed the 12,000-run mark in first-class cricket, a major career milestone. Across 167 first-class matches, he now averages over 44, with 33 centuries and 60 fifties. For Australia, he has scored 4,435 Test runs at an average of 46.19, including 11 centuries.
However, his recent World Test Championship (2023–25) record hasn’t been impressive. He has averaged just 27.82, with only one hundred in 20 matches, far below his earlier averages of 72.82 and 52.53 in the previous two WTC cycles.
This innings, therefore, sends a strong message to selectors, especially chief selector George Bailey, that Labuschagne is ready to return to his best ahead of the upcoming Ashes series.
Meanwhile, teammate Sam Konstas struggled in Perth, managing scores of just 4 and 14 against Western Australia. The first Ashes Test set to begin on November 21 in Perth.
