India's senior pros were in the thick of things on Sunday, November 30, as the KL Rahul-led side defeated South Africa by 17 runs in Ranchi to go 1-0 up in the ODI series.
South Africa showed a fight in the second innings to take the match to the final over, but fell short and suffered their first defeat of the tour. Here's how the match panned out.
Rohit and Kohli display an ODI batting masterclass
Former India captains Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma once again stitched a century stand for the second wicket after India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the innings at 25. The duo batted for 17.1 overs and scored 136 runs before Rohit was dismissed lbw by Marco Jansen at 57(51) with the help of five fours and three sixes.
Kohli, on the other hand, continued to bat and ended up scoring his 52nd ODI century and finished with 135(120) with 11 fours and seven big hits over the boundary line. He notably scored heavily against Prenelan Subrayen.
Rahul-Jadeja provide India a strong finish
After losing Kohli's wicket, captain KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja got a brisk 65(36) for the sixth wicket. In the process, Rahul continued his good ODI form and scored 60 off 56 with two fours and three sixes to his name. Jadeja finished with 32(20), as India ended with a score of 349/8 on the board.
Jansen, Nandre Burger, Corbin Bosch and Ottneil Baartman all picked a couple of wickets each, while Subrayen went wicketless.
Indian pacers cause troubles to SA top-order
The fast bowling duo of Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana put India on the front-foot early on in the second innings with early wickets of Ryan Rickelton (0), Quinton de Kock (2) and captain Aiden Markram (7). The left-arm pacer picked Markram, while Rana got rid of the other two.
South Africa were reduced to 11/3 at the 4.4 over mark before the middle order showed some respite.
Breetzke and Jansen provide Proteas some respite
Matthew Breetzke continued his supreme ODI run, with another fifty and added 66 runs for the fourth wicket with Tony de Zorzi. The latter added 39(35) at number 5 before he was trapped lbw by Kuldeep Yadav.
Dewald Brevis joined Breetzke and they put on another 53 off 40 for the fifth wicket before Brevis eventually fell to Rana, who also gave him an animated send-off.
After a high-flying knock in Guwahati, Jansen once again proved his prowess with the bat and got 70(39), with three sixes and 8 fours, putting the Indians under pressure, with a 97(69) stand for the 6th wicket.
Kuldeep leads India's fightback as Bosch's valiant effort goes in vain
Following a dismissal of de Zorzi earlier in the innings, Kuldeep was once again called by KL Rahul to rescue India from a precarious situation and the wrist-spinner did not disappoint.
In his final spell, Kuldeep got the wickets of the dangerous looking Breetzke (72), Jansen (70) and Subrayen (17) to put India in a winning position.
Corbin Bosch (67) got to his maiden ODI fifty on the night; however, his effort went in vain as they eventually fell short by 17 runs.
