KL Rahul extinguished Netherlands attack by punching out a roaring 64-ball 102 at the 2023 World Cup. Notching up the seventh ODI ton of his glittering career, the innings also extended his tournament tally near the 350-run mark, and he is currently ranked fourth among India’s highest run-getters of the competition, finding himself only behind the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer.

Remarkably, through the course of KL Rahul’s run-fest at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the cricketer also upstaged his current Indian coach Rahul Dravid for a huge World Cup record for his country.

KL Rahul blazes past Rahul Dravid for big record

KL Rahul launched his World Cup 2023 crusade with a match-defining 97* against Australia in Chennai. The Indian wicketkeeper-batsman also scored handy runs against Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand and England in team’s subsequent fixtures, before crashing Netherlands exit party with his magnum opus World Cup performance.

Overall, KL Rahul has tallied 347 runs in just eight innings of the ongoing tournament so far, having maintained an astonishing average of nearly 70.

Through his latest knock against Netherlands, the 31-year-old blazed past former batsman and team’s current head coach Rahul Dravid to amass the highest number of runs as an Indian wicketkeeper in a single World Cup edition.

Dravid held the previous record for more than 20 years for his 318-run tally from the 2003 World Cup in South Africa. India’s then wicketkeeper-batsman maintained an alluring average of 63.60 throughout the competition, and orchestrated run-chase masterclasses against Pakistan and New Zealand.

KL Rahul’s record-breaking innings against Netherlands, on the other hand, also became the fastest century ever listed by an Indian batter in an ODI World Cup match. The cricketer raced to the milestone off just 62 balls to break the previous record held by his captain Rohit Sharma (63 deliveries).
