Team India’s top-order ensemble, comprising of dashing openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill; as well as Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul; exhibited a collective and cohesive batting spectacle against Netherlands in their recent World Cup 2023 standoff in Bengaluru.
Each of the four aforementioned cricketers registered dazzling half-centuries for their side, ensuring that the ‘Men in Blue’ blazed past the 200-run mark inside the first 30 overs of the innings itself. Notably, their collective efforts also marked a rare new height in World Cup cricket, as they became the first-ever batting quartet in history to register 50-plus scores in a single innings at the grandest stage of the sport.
India’s top-order quartet achieve this World Cup record
Team India’s batting stalwarts, namely openers Shubman Gill and captain Rohit Sharma as well as Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer have become the first-ever top-order quartet to register fifty-plus scores together in a single innings of a World Cup game.
While Gill charted course for a blazing start with his 32-ball 51, his senior partner Sharma bludgeoned a 54-ball 61 from his end. In-form batter Kohli himself produced 51 imperial runs at number while Iyer outscored them all to take Team India past the 300-run mark as KL Rahul also notched up a fifty.
Notably, the Indian batters had also achieved a similar feat against pretty much the same Netherlands attack last year during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. Facing each other at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in their Group B game, opener Rohit Sharma alongside Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav registered their respective half-centuries to mark the first-ever instance of three out of team’s top four batters scoring 50 or more runs in a single T20 World Cup innings.
Team India ended up amassing 179-2 against Netherlands, a total which proved to be 56 runs bigger than the best run-chase efforts from the Dutchmen later in the match. Suryakumar, for his scintillating 25-ball 51*, was adjudged as the ‘Player of the Match’ for his efforts.
