KL Rahul has once again proven why he’s one of India’s 'most reliable' Test openers. On Day 4 of the ongoing first Test between India and England at Headingley, Leeds, Rahul played a crucial knock and completed his 18th Test half-century, reaching the mark in 87 balls.
More importantly, this fifty helped him join legends like Virender Sehwag and Murali Vijay with 9 scores of 50 or more in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries, a feat achieved by very few Indian openers. Only Sunil Gavaskar is ahead of him, having crossed the 50-run-mark on 19 occasions during his days.
Most 50+ Scores For An Indian Opener In SENA Countries:
19 - Sunil Gavaskar in 57 innings
9* - KL Rahul in 42 innings
9 - Murali Vijay in 42 innings
9 - Virender Sehwag in 49 innings
Headingley Test Hangs In Balance
India started Day 4 with KL Rahul on 47* and Shubman Gill on 6*. Although Gill fell early, Rahul stayed solid. He had narrowly missed a fifty in the first innings but made sure not to repeat that in the second.
The big moment came in the 29th over when Brydon Carse bowled a full toss on off stump. Rahul flicked it into the leg side and ran a couple of runs. That shot not only got him to his half-century but also brought up India’s 100 runs in the second innings. He raised his bat to the crowd in celebration.
It is worth mentioning that KL Rahul now has 75 fifty-plus scores in international cricket across all formats, underlining his class and consistency.
As the Test continues, both India and England are still very much in the game. With no clear advantage for either side, the match is likely to head into a thrilling Day 5 finish.
