It was supposed to be his big return, a comeback story after 16 months out of the Test side. But for Cam Green, the WTC Final at Lord’s has been nothing short of a nightmare.

Picked in the XI after a long injury layoff and some reshuffling at the top, the 26-year-old all-rounder had a golden chance to silence doubters. Instead, he barely lasted long enough for anyone to blink.

Rabada Turns Executioner As Cameron Green’s WTC Final Comeback Flops

How Cameron Green’s first innings went? Three balls, Four runs. And the only scoring shot came off his backside, literally. A flick off his hip down leg, clipped to the boundary. But the joy was short-lived. The very next ball, Kagiso Rabada moved a ball away and Green poked at it like a nervous tail-ender. Edged and Gone!!! Markram swallowed it up at second slip. Just like that, he was back in the pavilion.

If that wasn’t enough, the second innings was even worse. This time, just two balls. No runs. Another edge, another dismissal. This time it was Wiaan Mulder who did the catching. And once again, Kagiso Rabada doing the damage. It was like deja vu, only quicker.

The Green Punt Backfires For Australia

Green was slotted back into the Aussie line-up as part of a reshuffle that saw Marnus Labuschagne open the batting for the first time in Tests. A bold move. One that raised eyebrows. But the thinking was clear: get Green back in the mix, use his all-round value, even if he wasn’t bowling in this game.

But it is safe to say, so far, it hasn’t gone to plan. Two innings, four runs and a Test comeback that has fizzled before it really began. After undergoing back surgery, Green had slowly worked his way back to bowling fitness, even rolled the arm over in recent days. But he failed to show up.

AUS vs SA WTC Final Live Score Update

The only silver lining for Australia is that despite Green’s flop, they are still bossing the match. After posting 212 in the first innings, they knocked over South Africa for 138, gaining a handy 74-run lead. At Tea on Day 2, they are 32/2, leading by 106 runs with Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne holding the fort.

South Africa need early wickets to claw their way back in. But for Green, the bigger concern will be getting back into rhythm. Because right now, he is not just rusty, he is falling behind in a side full of performers.
