Australia and South Africa are facing off in the WTC 2025 Final at the Lord's in London. After the defending champions were bundled out for 212 in the first innings, South Africa were steadily progressing towards a respectable total.

After South Africa lost the first four wickets on the first dary, Temba Bavuma took up the responsibility of mending the innings for his team. He was looking well settled in the middle at 36 off 83 when Cummins picked up his wicket and triggered a dramatic collapse. At the end of the innings, Cummins finished with figures of 6 for 28 in his 18.1 overs.

Pat Cummins Changes The Momentum With The Wicket Of His Counterpart

The importance of this performance is not in the numbers, it is the moment when it came. Cummins struck the most important wicket of Bavuma at a stage that more or less defined the game. As the adhesive of the Proteas' innings went out, it completely fell apart and Australia were successful in taking a 74-run lead at the end of the first innings.

What Cummins did today was a perfect example of a skipper leading from the front. But this is not the first time that he has done this.

Other Instances Of Cummins When He Seized The Momentum At The Perfect Time

Let us go back to WTC Final 2023, India was in the middle of a recovering partnership between Ajinkya Rahane and Shardul Thakur. Pat Cummins came into the attack and picked up the wicket of Rahane and this ensured a lead for Australia in the first innings that put the Indians behind in the game.

Okay, now let us go to the mesmerising knock of Glenn Maxwell against Afghanistan in the ODI World Cup 2023. It was a game where a defeat could have spelt the end of the journey for the Aussies. Everyone remembers the wonders of Maxwell but who partnered with him without losing his cool? It was Pat Cummins, a calm composed second fiddle doing what was needed at the stage. Another example of the nerves of steel that the man has.

Including what Cummins did in the WTC 2025 final against South Africa, at least three prominent instances come to mind when he played a crucial role for his team in a clutch game. This puts him in the same league as some of the greatest skippers in the world.

Other Great Captains Leading From The Front

Clive Lloyd

The West Indian skipper was the architect of the team winning the inaugural ODI World Cup. Clive Lloyd's century laid the foundation for the Carribean team to win against the hosts and discoverer of the game, England.

Ricky Ponting

Indian fans will not easily forget the knock of 'Punter' in the World Cup 2003 final. Ricky Ponting looked possessed in that game. His century helped Australia to such a total, that was considered out of reach in that era.

MS Dhoni

Well just like that nightmare of Ponting, Indian fans will not easily forget MS Dhoni's knock in the World Cup 2011 final. The man came into bat when India was under pressure while chasing and played a flamboyant knock of 91 runs helping India to a record chase in the World Cup finals.

Conclusion

These are some prominent examples of captains standing up on the biggest of stages. There could be many other instances, but such supreme efforts in crucial games can come only once or twice to a single player in his career while leading his team. However, Pat Cummins has already done this on three occasions. This puts him towards the summit of the best captains to have ever graced the game, but does he stand at the peak? Well, it is for the reader to decide.
