A concerning development has emerged from the England camp as veteran player Joe Root has been sidelined following an injury to his right little finger during the third day of the ongoing Test match against India in Visakhapatnam. The incident, which occurred in the 18th over of India's second innings, saw Root attempting a challenging catch in the slip cordon off Tom Hartley's bowling.

IND vs ENG: Finger injury has sidelined Joe Root in Vizag Test

The ball, edged by Indian opener Shubman Gill, was played with force and ended up flying towards Root, who, despite an excellent effort, failed to secure the catch. The mishap not only resulted in Root's injury but also allowed the ball to race to the boundary, providing Gill with a crucial reprieve. At that point, Gill was batting at 21 and concluded the session on an impressive 60 not out, playing a big role in India's quest to recover in the series.

The England Cricket Board has since released a statement confirming Root's injury: “Joe Root sustained an external blow to his right little finger, attempting a slip catch in the first session of D3. The England medical team will keep him off the field for the time being to treat and ice. At this stage, there is no indication of when he will return to the field,”

Root's absence is a significant blow to England, considering his contributions not just with the bat but also with his off-break bowling, which has troubled the Indian batsmen in the series. His performance in Hyderabad, where he took a total of five wickets across two innings proved his value to the team.

At the time of writing this article, with India at 165/4 after 41 overs and holding a lead of 308 runs, England will undoubtedly feel the absence of Root's experience and skill. Shubman Gill, now batting at 83 alongside Axar Patel at 14, continues to be a key players for India, further intensifying the challenge for England in the ongoing Test.
