Indian batsman Shubman Gill, who’s been terribly out of form, narrowly escaped dismissal twice on Day 3 of the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam. Following a disappointing departure for 34 runs in the first innings off James Anderson, Gill's performance in the second innings was closely scrutinized. However, fortune favoured the young batsman, granting him two critical lifelines that kept Indian hopes alive on Day 3..

Shubman Gill survived two close calls in second innings

Gill's first escape came in the 10th over, facing spinner Tom Hartley. Initially adjudged lbw, the decision was overturned upon review. UltraEdge detected a slight deflection, indicating the ball had grazed the bat before hitting the pad, thereby sparing Gill from an early exit.

The drama intensified in the following over with James Anderson, a nemesis from the first innings, targeting Gill once more. A delivery that sharply nipped back struck Gill on the knee roll, leading to a confident appeal from England. Although the umpire's initial decision was not out, England's review revealed the ball to be clipping the top of the middle stump. However, the verdict remained as Umpire's Call, allowing Gill to continue his innings.

Despite these narrow escapes, India faced challenges early on Day 3, losing openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal to Anderson in quick succession. At the time of writing this article, India is 42/2 after 14 overs. Gill and Shreyas Iyer are at the crease with India holding a lead of 185 runs. The duo will aim to create a solid partnership by spending some time at the crease as both of them have been going through a lean phase in recent times.
