Joe Root, the former Test captain of England, has once again demonstrated his prowess in the longest format of the game. On August 29, Root smashed his 33rd Test century against Sri Lanka during the second Test at Lord's, further solidifying his position as one of the modern greats. 

This remarkable achievement not only matched Alastair Cook's record for the most Test centuries by an English player but also saw Root surpass India's star batter Rohit Sharma in the elite list of most international hundreds among current. 

With his 49th international century, Root has now moved past Rohit Sharma, who has 48 international centuries to his name. This feat places Root just behind India’s Virat Kohli, who leads the chart with an impressive 80 international hundreds.

England’s Commanding Position at Lord’s

England ended the day at 358/7 after being put in to bat by Sri Lanka. Root's brilliant knock of 143 off 206 balls, featuring 18 boundaries, was the highlight of the day. 

He formed crucial partnerships with Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson, adding 62 and 92 runs respectively, ensuring England's dominance despite losing early wickets. While Sri Lanka's bowlers displayed discipline, it was Root’s stellar performance that kept England in a commanding position.
