India openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal had a very rough time in the second innings of the first Test between India and South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. India started Day 3 needing just 124 runs to win after bowling out South Africa in the first session. Fans expected Rahul and Jaiswal to give India a quick and solid start.

However, things went wrong almost immediately. Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for a four-ball duck in the first over. Soon after, KL Rahul also fell cheaply, scoring just 1 run off 6 balls, dismissed by Marco Jansen. By the third over, India had already lost both openers.
Their combined performance created an unwanted record. Together, they scored just 1 run, making it one of the lowest totals by Indian openers in a Test innings at home.
Here is where their performance stands among the poorest opening aggregates on Indian soil:
Fewest aggregate by Indian openers in an innings in home Tests
| Matches | Partnership Score | Batsmen and Individual Scores |
| India vs Australia, Chennai 1964 | 0 | ML Jaisimha (0), Indrajitsinhji (0) |
| India vs New Zealand, Mohali 1999 | 0 | Devang Gandhi (0), S Ramesh (0) |
| India vs New Zealand, Ahmedabad 2010 | 1 | Gambhir (0), Sehwag (1) |
| India vs South Africa, Kolkata 2025 | 1 | Jaiswal (0), KL Rahul (1) |
This innings also marked Jaiswal’s third duck in Test cricket in 2025, placing him on an unwanted list with Mohammed Siraj (also three ducks). Jasprit Bumrah leads that list with four ducks this year.
As for the match situation, India went to lunch at 10 for two after seven overs, with a small target still ahead.
Earlier in the day, South Africa had put up a fighting performance in their second innings. Their captain, Temba Bavuma, played a steady and important innings, scoring an unbeaten 55 from 136 balls. Corbin Bosch supported him with 25 off 37 balls. Despite their efforts, South Africa were bowled out for 153.
