Pakistan’s spirited wicketkeeper-batsman, Mohammad Rizwan has given his team hope in their challenging chase of 345 runs against Sri Lanka in Match 8 of the World Cup 2023 at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
Rizwan's century the highlight in Pakistan's mighty chase
Rizwan's exceptional ton came up in just 97 balls, showcasing his aggressive intent and sublime form. The moment of his century was witnessed on the very first ball of the 42nd over.
Rizwan stylishly clipped a delivery from Matheesha Pathirana to the deep square leg region, taking a single and marking his illustrious century in the process. What made this century even more special was the way it was scored under immense pressure in a big game.
While Sri Lanka had posted a mammoth total of 344, the Pakistanis showed resilience. At 42 overs, with the score at 283/3, the game is hanging in the balance. Alongside Rizwan, who is batting on 104, Saud Shakeel is providing the needed support with his contribution of 23 runs.
However, it wasn't all smooth sailing for the Men in Green. Two vital wickets, those of the prolific Imam-ul-Haq and captain, Babar Azam, were taken by Sri Lankan pacer, Dilshan Madushanka. On the other hand, Abdullah Shafique, featuring in his debut World Cup match, made a significant contribution by scoring 113 before falling prey to Pathirana's bowling.
With another 62 runs required off the remaining 48 balls, the contest has become a nail-biter, and all eyes are now on Rizwan and Shakeel to see if they can pull off a memorable victory for Pakistan.
