In a stunning display of batting prowess, Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis shattered Kumar Sangakkara's ODI World Cup record for the fastest century, reaching his hundred in just 65 balls against Pakistan at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Mendis provided a flying start to Sri Lanka in their second match of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, notching up a spectacular century. His breathtaking innings of 122 runs from 71 deliveries was laced with 14 boundaries and six sixes.

With this, he also became the only Sri Lankan batter to score a century against Pakistan in ODI World Cups. The previous best by a Sri Lankan batter was 89 by Roshan Mahanama in Hyderabad back in the 1987 World Cup.

As cricket fans worldwide shower Kusal Mendis with their wishes for his magnificent knock, one particularly special reaction has come from India's stylish batter, Suryakumar Yadav, who seems in complete awe of Mendis' outstanding performance.

Taking to X [formerly Twitter], here’s what Suryakumar Yadav wrote:

“Kusal mendis, what a knock”

Thanks to Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama’s outstanding century knocks, Sri Lanka went on to put a mammoth total of 344 runs on the scoreboard after opting to bat first. Apart from the centurion duo, the opening batter Pathum Nissanka also clobbered a half-century.
