Smriti Mandhana ravaged West Indies bowlers with a fluent half-century before Renuka Singh wrecked the visiting top-order as India Women romped to a huge victory in the first ODI match at the Reliance Stadium in Vadodara. The outcome helped Harmanpreet Kaur and co. take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Indian debutant Pratika Rawal played her part with a cautious 40 in a 110-run opening stand with senior partner Smriti Mandhana. Rawal listed four boundaries during her 69-ball knock until she was caught-and-bowled by Hayley Matthews in the 24th over of the Indian innings.

Mandhana, at the other end, notched up her fifth successive fifty-plus score in international cricket and staged another 50 runs, this time with number three batter Harleen Deol to take India past the 150-run mark around 30 overs. 

The senior Indian opener hauled 91 runs from 102 balls with 13 boundaries, before West Indies spinner Zaida James robbed her of a well-deserved century.

Harleen Deol (44 off 50) and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (34 off 23 balls) upped the ante in the middle overs to bring India’s innings run-rate above 5.50 per over.

However, Deol and Kaur’s quick dismissals to Deandra Dottin (1-63) and to a runout at 237-4 left attacking wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh to restructure India’s death-overs aggression with Jemimah Rodrigues.

Richa dispatched four boundaries and a six off her 13-ball blazing stay to amount 26 runs, while Rodrigues was cleaned up by Zaida James at 297-6 after smearing 31 runs from just 19 balls. Zaida added three more wickets to her tally at the death to claim astonishing figures of 5-45, but Team India ended up mounting 314-9 from their 50 overs.

Prolific West Indies opener Qiana Joseph fell to a bizarre runout in the first ball of the run-chase. Thereafter, India’s new ball expert Renuka Singh wrecked the entirety of West Indies top half with four wickets inside the first 13 overs of the innings.

Renuka induced a nick off Hayley Matthews for a five-ball duck, cleaned up Deandra Dottin and Shabika Gajnabi, and had Aaliyah Alleyne caught out by captain Harmanpreet Kaur as the visitors crashed to 34-6 at one stage of the run-chase.

Shemaine Campbelle made 21 runs from 39 balls before becoming the fifth of Renuka Singh’s five-wickets of the evening as the Indian speedster collected figures of 5-29 from 10 overs.

Indian spinners Priya Mishra (2-22) and Deepti Sharma (1-19) accounted for three of the final four wickets on offer as the West Indies line-up folded up for just 103 in 26.2 overs to hand India a huge 211-run victory.
