Brief Scores: India (1st innings): 396 all out (112 overs) [Yashasvi Jaiswal: 209 (290), Shubman Gill: 34 (46); James Anderson 3/47 (25), Rehan Ahmed 3/65 (17)] & India (2nd innings): 28-0 (5 overs) [Yashasvi Jaiswal: 15* (17), Rohit Sharma: 13* (13)] lead England (1st innings): 253 all out (55.5 overs) [Zak Crawley: 76 (78), Ben Stokes: 47 (54); Jasprit Bumrah 6/45 (15.5), Kuldeep Yadav 3/71 (17)] by 171 runs.

After a commanding opening day, Team India strengthened its grip over England by stumps on Day 2 of the second Test match off the back of clean-up bowling acts from Jasprit Bumrah and comeback man Kuldeep Yadav.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s double ton takes IND to 396

Unbeaten Yashasvi Jaiswal monopolised his overnight career-best Test score to make his maiden double century within the opening hour of Day 2. The youngster forged crucial runs with Ravichandran Ashwin before both were bested by England’s ageing warhorse James Anderson.

Remarkably, Jaiswal’s magnum opus 209-run effort alone accounted for more than half of Team India’s overall total, as the hosts folded up for 396 courtesies of Anderson’s double-strike and timely breakthroughs from spinners Shoaib Bashir and Rehan Ahmed.

Employing their usual ‘Bazball’ routine, English openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett raced to their 50-run stand before the latter was deceived by Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Crawley took up the subsequent run-scoring charge alongside silent partner Ollie Pope by whacking a near run-a-ball 76 during their 55-run partnership for the second wicket.

After Axar Patel snapped Crawley’s blitzkrieg against the run of play, Jasprit Bumrah tore through England’s middle-order with three key wickets in quick succession. The seasoned Indian paceman knocked over in-form Ollie Pope as well as senior men Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow as England slumped from 114-1 to 159-5 in the space of an hour.

Kuldeep Yadav further dismissed Ben Foakes and Rehan Ahmed to finish with a three-fer in his comeback Test, while Bumrah curtailed Ben Stokes’ rebellion before polishing off the tail to secure sizzling figures of 6-45 from 15.5 overs.

England folded up for 253 in less than two sessions to hand India a huge first innings advantage of 143 runs. Indian openers Rohit Sharma (13*) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (15*) survived through the remaining five overs of the day and extended their lead to 171 runs by stumps.
