Rohit Sharma snapped his century drought to orchestrate India’s big run-chase against England in the second ODI match at Cuttack’s Barabati Stadium. The outcome helped Team India seal the three-match series by a game to spare.
Here’s the timeline of how IND vs ENG panned out in Cuttack:
IND vs ENG Highlights: Duckett, Joe Root 50s Lead The English Way
England started off with an 81-run opening partnership from just 11 overs between Phil Salt and Ben Duckett. While Salt fell to a tossed-up delivery from Indian debutant Varun Chakravarthy (1-54) after making 26 from 29, Duckett notched up a 36-ball fifty, scoring 65 runs in all from 56 deliveries with 10 eloquent boundaries.
However, Duckett’s fiery stay was halted by Ravindra Jadeja shortly after the Englishmen crossed the 100-run mark in less than 16 overs. Struggling senior pro Joe Root at number three subsequently conjured 50-plus partnerships with Harry Brook (31 off 52) and captain Jos Buttler (34 off 35) to take England past the 150-run and 200-run marks respectively. While Harshit Rana (1-62) and Hardik Pandya (1-53) accounted for the wickets of Brook and Buttler during their expensive spells, Root silently composed a near run-a-ball half-century, the 40th of his ODI career.
IND vs ENG Highlights: Ravindra Jadeja Ensures India Finish Strong In Final 10 Overs
With England assuming full command at 230-4 in 40 overs, senior spinner Ravindra Jadeja tilted the tide back in India’s favor by picking up the quick wickets of half-centurion Joe Root (69 off 72) and number seven Jamie Overton. Picking up three wickets in the innings, Jadeja conceded just 35 runs from his 10 overs.
Liam Livingstone slogged a few during the death overs, blasting 41 runs off 32 balls with a couple of huge sixes to sustain England’s run-scoring ways. However, with the runouts of Livingstone, as well as that of tailenders Adil Rashid and Mark Wood; coupled with a wicket for Mohammed Shami (1-66) ensured the visitors folded up for 304 with a ball to spare in the innings.
IND vs ENG Highlights: Rohit Sharma Snaps Century Drought To Set Up Indian Chase
Indian captain and legendary opening batter Rohit Sharma brought up his 32nd ODI century, and his first in nearly a year-and-a-half after he shared an assaultive 136-run opening partnership with Shubman Gill in just 16.4 overs. Gill himself cracked 60 runs off 52 balls before getting knocked over by Jamie Overton.
India’s comeback man Virat Kohli failed to sustain his team’s top-order momentum, as he nicked one towards wicketkeeper Phil Salt off Adil Rashid (1-78) for just five as the Englishmen silently made their way back into the game at 150-2.
Captain Sharma, however, belted 12 boundaries and launched seven huge sixes to top-score with 119 from 90 balls to bolt India past 200. Sharing a 70-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer, the seasoned opener made his way back to the sheds at 220-3 after skying one towards Rashid off part-timer Liam Livingstone (1-29).
IND vs ENG Highlights: Axar Patel Overcomes Late Jitters To Seal Indian Win
Shreyas Iyer at number four crafted 44 off 47 balls before a runout prevented him from recording his second successive half-century. KL Rahul (10 off 14) and Hardik Pandya (10 off 6) also walked back to the pavilion in the space of few overs courtesy of Jamie Overton (2-27) and Gus Atkinson (1-65) respectively as India slipped from 258-3 to 286-6 by the end of the 42nd over.
Overcoming late jitters, Axar Patel composed a near run-a-ball 41* to navigate India past England’s 304 with four wickets and 5.5 overs to spare.
