Ruturaj Gaikwad, an innings after joining an elite Indian batting club of T20I centurions, surpassed seasoned campaigner KL Rahul for a huge T20 record. Turning up for India in their high-octane fourth T20I match against Australia in Raipur, the cricketer achieved a significant feat when he squeezed visiting pacer Aaron Hardie down the ground for a single at the edge of the opening powerplay.

Ruturaj Gaikwad racks up major Indian T20 record

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who entered the contest with 3,993 runs on his T20 profile, became the fastest Indian cricketer in history to complete 4,000 runs in the format. The dashing opening batsman achieved the feat during India’s fourth T20I of their five-match home series against the visiting Australian unit.

The 26-year-old, scaling the landmark figure in just his 116th innings, broke the previous record held by Indian batting stalwart KL Rahul (117 innings).

Gaikwad made his competitive T20 debut through Maharashtra back in February 2017 and has so far appeared in 121 matches in the format spanning numerous domestic tournaments, IPL matches and 18 internationals for the Indian team.

Earlier in the ongoing series against Australia, Ruturaj Gaikwad scored a match-winning 58 in Thiruvananthapuram and followed it up with a record-shattering 123* against the same opponents in Guwahati. The innings marked his maiden T20I century, and the fifth of his competitive T20 career.

Gaikwad’s 123-run counterpunch also became one of India’s highest individual T20I scores, eclipsing Virat Kohli’s 122* and Rohit Sharma’s 118. The unbeaten 126 scored by Shubman Gill against New Zealand in Ahmedabad earlier this year continues to remain India’s magnum opus T20I effort by a single batter.
