IND vs AUS 2023 | Gill, Gaikwad Punch Out 70s After Shami’s Five-Wicket Haul To Take IND 1-0 Up

Team India handed Australia their fourth successive ODI defeat in the first match of their three-game series at Mohali. The ‘Men in Blue’, under interim skipper KL Rahul, routed their guests with nearly two overs to spare as both teams brace themselves for next month’s 2023 World Cup.

Warner’s 52, Shami’s five-fer headline AUS 276

Mohammed Shami made instant impact in his comeback game by removing provisional Australian opener Mitchell Marsh within the opening over for four. Thereafter, David Warner slapped his 29th ODI half-century and shared 94 runs with number three Steve Smith.

Warner’s near run-a-ball 52 turned out to be Australia’s highest score of the innings as none of the subsequent Australian batters converted their confident starts into a notable one. Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis all missed out on their respective half-centuries while late surge from Marcus Stoinis and Pat Cummins lifted Australia to a competitive 276.

Shami eventually finished with 5-51 to claim only his second ODI five-fer and his career-best figures. His pace mate Jasprit Bumrah and spin twins Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja all claimed a wicket each from their ends.

Gill, Gaikwad, Yadav find form in clinical win

India’s new opening combo Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad slapped 70s each from their ends in their colossal 142-run stand at the top. Both batters belted boundaries at will and looked favourites to notch up their respective triple-figure scores before Adam Zampa toppled them with his legbreak dexterity.

Regardless, Gill’s 74 and Gaikwad’s 71 laid out a concrete foundation of a clinical Indian win, and gave them some much-needed match time ahead of their respective World Cup 2023 and Asian Games participation.

Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan failed to pile on the pressure as both had made their way back into the hut by the time Team India reached 185.

Thereafter, captain KL Rahul and out-of-form Suryakumar Yadav sensibly guided their side towards with crafty half-centuries. Yadav mistimed one at the edge of the finishing line while his skipper concluded the proceedings with a six to take India 1-0 up in the three-match series.

The two sides will now face each other in the second ODI on September 24 in Indore.
