After dominating England in a surprising result in the ICC World Cup 2023 opener in Ahmedabad, New Zealand move to Hyderabad for their next league stage encounter of the marquee tournament against rising associates Netherlands on Monday (October 9).

The Dutch stay at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium after missing out on a great opportunity to shock the much-fancied Pakistan side at the venue in their first match played on Friday. They will have another chance at hand to upstage a major opposition when they take on the BlackCaps.

NZ vs NED: Team Previews

New Zealand

The Kiwis had blown away tournament favourites England with a comprehensive performance in Ahmedabad. Despite missing a couple of key bowlers, the 2019 runners-up restricted the three lions to 282/9 in the first half before the top-order duo of the experienced Devon Conway and the promising Rachin Ravindra vanished the English hopes with a century apiece.

Solid opening batter Conway aced the England challenge with an unbeaten 152 off 121 deliveries to become the first centurion of the tournament. Conway's presence acted as a springboard and inspiration for the more aggressive Ravindra, who hogged the limelight with a breathtaking knock of 123 not out off 96 balls as the two left-handers closed out the proceedings before the 37th over.

In the bowling department, the BlackCaps would've been encouraged by the performances of right-arm seamer Matt Henry (3/48) and the spin pairing of Mitchell Santner (2/37) and Glenn Phillips (2/27). The trio bagged eight wickets between them to derail the England batting unit.

New Zealand will feel buoyed by the return of Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson from respective injuries as it further bolsters their bowling unit ahead of the next match against the Netherlands even as regular skipper and modern-day giant Kane Williamson stays absent on the batting front.

Netherlands

The Dutch will be disappointed for not closing out multiple possible openings in the match against Pakistan. The associate rivals had the Asian Giants 38/3 in the tenth over of the first half and were themselves placed at 120/2 in the chase of 287. However, inexperience cost them badly in either skill, giving Pakistan a backdoor entry into the contest before 1992 champions ultimately bossed the game by 81 runs.

Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards admitted after the game it was "the one that got away" from his team's grasp after attaining a promising hold on the contest at various stages. Being unfamiliar with a dry surface in Hyderabad only worsened the case for the tournament underdogs.

But there was one major positive in the form of talented allrounder Bas de Leede, who continued his heartening rise at the international stage with a terrific allround display versus a strong Pakistani outfit. The young seamer delivered an impressive spell of 4/62 in the first half and backed it up with a brilliant innings of 67 even as the rest fell cheaply around him.

The Dutch will require De Leede to retain his best touch and for the rest to provide him greater support if they are to give New Zealand a hard time on the field.

NZ vs NED: Hyderabad Pitch Report

The surface in Hyderabad tends to get progressively tougher for batting. Chasing has been tricky at the venue as seen in the way the Dutch run-chase simply wilted away in the back half of their innings against Pakistan. From an encouraging position at 120/2, they were bundled out for 205 . Expect a similar surface for the New Zealand-Netherlands game at a ground where teams batting first have won five of the last eight One-Day Internationals played.

NZ vs NED: Winner Prediction

Despite Netherlands entering the World Cup in high spirits and threatening to pose a challenge, one would expect New Zealand to be a challenge too stiff for them at this stage of their development. Expect the Kiwis to continue their winning run in Hyderabad.
