India are in the driver's seat in the ongoing 2nd Test between India and England at Edgbaston. The Shubman Gill-led side put 427/6 on the board before declaring the innings, posing a 608-run target for the Three Lions courtesy of a 180-run lead in the first innings.

The hosts are handed an uphill task as England have been asked to chase down the highest total in the history of Test cricket. Notably, India, batting first, rode on Shubman Gill's double hundred and put 587 runs on the board.

In reply, England avoided a follow-on because of tons from Harry Brook and Jamie Smith. Nonetheless, the Three Lions tumbled for 407 runs, giving India a 180-run lead. The Shubman Gill-led side batted well in the second innings, asking England to chase down 608 runs. Let's look at the highest successful run chase in Test cricket.

Highest Successful Run Chase In Test Cricket

The mighty West Indies hold the record for the highest successful run-chase in Test cricket, a record they scripted in 2003 when the Windies stunned Australia by chasing down 418 runs at Antigua Cricket Ground.

Ramesh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul were the heroes in that epic chase with centuries, which helped the side from the Caribbean win by three wickets.

What is The Highest Successful Run-Chase At Edgbaston

Talking about chasing a target at the Edgbaston, the venue for the 2nd Test between India and England, the hosts will have to break their previous record and also chase down the highest fourth-innings total at Edgbaston.

Interestingly, the highest successful run-chase at Edgbaston came when England chased down 378 against India in 2022. Chasing is not easy at Edgbaston as the second-best chase came in 2008 when South Africa chased 281.
