The 3rd match of the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2024 is underway between India and Afghanistan at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.

In the ongoing match, India won the toss and in a surprising move, chose to bat first. However, when the Men in Blue arrived on the ground for the national anthem, the fans witnessed players wearing black armbands. Here is why the Indian players are supporting an armband against Afghanistan.

Notably, on Thursday, June 20,  a tragic incident occured as former India seamer David Johnson  passed away aged 52 after he fell from his balcony of the fourth floor at his house.

However, according to the police, Johnson reportedly committed a suicide. The former India seamer is survived by his wife and two children.

"Team India will wear black armbands today in memory of former India fast bowler David Johnson, who passed away on Thursday,” the BCCI had said shortly before the start of play at the Kensington Oval.

Thus, to honour Johnson's legacy, the Indian players are wearing black arm bands. Notably, Johnson represented India in two Test matches in 1996. Nonetheless, he had a great first-class career, but injuries cut short his international career.

After his playing years, he was actively involved in coaching and mentoring young talents.

At the time of writing this article, India are 34/1 after 5 overs. Rohit Sharma could not score big and gave his wicket to Fazalhaq Farooqi, who is the leading wicket-taker of this tournament.
