Pakistan secured a hard-fought five-wicket win over the West Indies in the first ODI, taking a 1-0 lead in the series after a composed chase guided by Hasan Nawaz and Hussain Talat’s match-winning partnership.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Pakistan’s bowlers kept the West Indies in check, restricting them to 280 before their batters chased down the target with seven balls to spare. Let's take a look at how the match panned out at Tarouba.

West Indies’ Late Flourish With The Bat

The West Indies innings got off to a shaky start as Brandon King fell in the very first over, trapped lbw by Shaheen Shah Afridi. However, Evin Lewis and Keacy Carty stabilised the innings with a solid 77-run partnership. Lewis looked in fine touch, scoring a fluent 60 off 68 balls before being dismissed by part-time spinner Saim Ayub. Carty contributed a steady 30 before falling to Sufiyan Muqeem, leaving the hosts at 99/3.

Skipper Shai Hope and Roston Chase then anchored the innings with a cautious 63-run stand. Hope laboured to a 74-ball fifty before falling to Shaheen while attempting to accelerate. Just when it seemed the West Indies would struggle to reach 250, Gudakesh Motie provided a late surge, which propelled the hosts to 280 before Naseem Shah cleaned up the tail in the 49th over.

Nawaz-Talat's Partnership Saves Pakistan's Chase

Pakistan’s chase began poorly as Jayden Seales removed Saim Ayub early. However, Abdullah Shafique and Babar Azam steadied the innings with a 59-run partnership before Shamar Joseph dismissed Shafique via a successful LBW review. Babar then combined with Mohammad Rizwan to add 55 runs, seemingly putting Pakistan in control.

But the West Indies fought back as Gudakesh Motie outfoxed Babar (47) with a clever delivery, resulting in a stumping. Roston Chase then dismissed Salman Agha cheaply, and when Shamar Joseph trapped Rizwan (51) lbw in the 38th over, the game hung in the balance.

Then debutant Hasan Nawaz and Hussain Talat, turned the match with an unbroken 104-run partnership. Talat’s aggressive intent, including a 17-run over off Shamar Joseph, shifted momentum. Nawaz, initially cautious, accelerated brilliantly, finishing on 63* off 54 balls. Talat’s fiery 37* off 29 ensured Pakistan crossed the line comfortably in the penultimate over to take the series lead 1-0.
