While confirming his position for the T20 World Cup 2026, Mitchell Marsh also hinted at a possible promotion for Tim David up the batting order. Although Marsh is set to continue as an opener alongside Travis Head, he expressed optimism about giving David a more flexible role.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the South Africa series, Mitchell Marsh confirmed he would retain his place at the top of the order despite modest returns so far. In six innings as an opener, he has scored just 98 runs at an average of 16.33, a stark contrast to his impressive record at No. 3, where he has amassed 1,276 runs at an average of 37.53.
Mitchell Marsh Keeps Tim David's Name In the Mix As An Opener
Since the 2024 T20 World Cup, Australia have also experimented with Matthew Short, Glenn Maxwell, and Jake Fraser-McGurk as openers. Marsh acknowledged the value of Tim David’s big-hitting abilities, especially after his recent heroics against West Indies, hinting his potential rank up in the order as an opener.
"We've spoken about it … we saw that in the Caribbean, that he came in earlier than he would normally. His skill set is made for that. The more balls he faces, hopefully the more games he wins us," Marsh said about David.
David's Recent Explosive Form With The Bat
David’s form has been nothing short of explosive. In the recently concluded T20 series against West Indies, he produced two innings of pure power-hitting brilliance. In the 3rd T20, he smashed an unbeaten 102 off just 37 balls, dismantling the West Indian bowling attack with clean, powerful strokes. Across the series, he maintained a staggering strike rate of 269.39 and an average of 132.00 from just two innings, firmly underlining his match-winning potential.
Although David has not opened frequently in T20Is, including him in the mix could offer Australia an explosive and unconventional opening option for the upcoming World Cup.
